CTHS As Day Zero Approaches - 2 Feb '18

The looming water crisis in our beloved City of Cape Town will certainly affect the day-to-day lives of us all, learners, parents and teachers alike.

CTHS management is currently considering various options available for rainwater harvesting, water recycling and managing school ablutions facilities under conditions of severely restricted municipal water. We have attended briefings on the forthcoming water shortage, at provincial level. A serious change in attitude to saving water is urgently needed.

It is clear that each and every one of us has a vital role to play in conserving water. As per the level 6B water restrictions introduced at the start of February, a focused and disciplined approach to keeping our individual water consumption to below 50 litres per person per day is crucial. If that target is not met, Day Zero (when the dams run dry) will happen (at current estimates) on 16 April 2018. The City Council maintains a Day Zero website [here].

As part of this approach, we request that all learners start bringing their own bottles of drinking water to school each day. Should the school's taps run dry in April, at least our learners will have developed the habit of bringing their own water.

A useful PDF of Water Saving Tips from City Council is [here].

Thanking you in advance

Mr E. M. Cloete
CTHS Principal
